Competition and Tournaments

Table Tennis competition, defined, is "playing in USATT and/or ITTF sanctioned tournaments in order to improve one's rating"

A USATT table tennis rating can be between 0-3000. The world's top players are usually rated from 2500-3000. In order to receive a rating, a player must play one or more rated players in a tournament. USATT officials decide on your starting rating.

After they receive their first rating, players can improve their ratings by defeating other players (see Table 1). If a player plays another player who is ranked between 13-37 points more than him/her, that player defeats the higher rated player, it is called an "upset". For this, the winner would receive 10 more rating points. The loser would lose 10 rating points (see Table 1)

RATING POINTS EXCHANGED BETWEEN PLAYERS

In a tournament, there are always different events. These might include: Open Singles, Under 2500, Under 1500 and Under 1000. If a player is rated 900, he/she could play in each of these events. If a player is rated 1300, he/she could play in every event except for "Under 1000 singles", and so on. If a player is rated over 2500, he/she could only play in the "Open Singles" event.
